Descent down the chimney

Clouds covered the sun for three days. On June 28th, they awoke to bright sunshine. At noon the shadow of Scartaris felt on the middle of the three chimneys. Then their journey began, they prepared to descend the chimney. Hans put the tools and the scientific instruments into a bag tied to the rope. He threw down the rope, they tied a long rope to the edge of the chimney and descended.
غطت السحب الشمس لمدة ثلاثة أيام وفى اليوم الثامن عشر من شهر يونيو، استيقظوا على ضوء الشمس اللامع وسقطت ظلال جبل "Scartaris" ظهراً على منتصف الثلاثة مداخن. ثم بعد ذلك بدأوا رحلتهم وأعدوا أنفسهم للنزول الى المدخنه. وضع هانس الأدوات والأجهزه العلميه داخل شنطه مربوطه بحبل. القى هانس الحبل الى أسفل وربطوه بحافة المدخنه ونزلوا اليها.

After three hours in the bottom of the chimney, there was hardly any light. It was getting darker and darker. Lidenbrock said to Axel that he had examined the rocks and found that the Centre of the Earth couldn't be hot. He said that all the scientists who thought that the Centre of the Earth was hot were wrong.
بعد مرور ثلاثة ساعات وهم اسفل المدخنه لم يكن هناك أى نور. كلما مر الوقت كانت تزداد ظلاماً. قال ليدنبروك لأكسيل بأنه قد فحص الصخور ووجد ان مركز الأرض سوف لا يكون ساخناً وأن كل العلماء الذين إعتقدوا أن مركز الأرض ساخناً كانوا مخطئين.

Early morning the following day, a ray of sunlight awoke them and the red lava walls sparkled like jewels. The three men left the main chimney and entered a small passage that led off to the right. When they stopped for the night, they were in a kind of cave. But there was plenty of air. There was a wind blowing through the cave.
فى الصباح الباكر لليوم التالى كانت هناك أشعه من ضوء الشمس أيقظت أكسيل وعمه وهانس ، وكانت حوائط الحمم البركانيه الحمراء اللون تتلألأ مثل المجوهرات. تركوا الثلاثة رجال المدخنه ودخلوا ممر صغير حيث قادهم الى جهة اليمين. وعندما توقفوا عن العمل للراحه ليلاً جلسوا فى نوع من الكهوف ولكن كان هناك الكثير من الهواء وكانت هناك رياح أتيه من خلال الكهف.


Axel was too tired and hungry but there was something else that worried him. They had used about half of water that they had, but professor had expected to find underground springs of water.
كان أكسيل فى شدة التعب والجوع ولكن كان هناك شئ أخر يقلقه أيضاً وهو انهم قد إستنفذوا حوالى نصف كمية المياه التى كانت معهم. ولكن توقع البروفيسور أن يجد كميات وفيره من المياه تحت الأرض ( المياه الجوفيه ).

At noon the following day, they came to the end of the passage which was divided into two paths, one going east, the other west. Professor didn't hesitate to go to the eastern path and the two men followed him.
وصلوا الثلاثة رجال فى ظهر اليوم التالى الى نهاية الممر التى كان منقسم الى ممرين، إحداهما الى الشرق والأخر الى الغرب. هذا لم يجعل البروفيسور يتردد فى الذهاب الى الممر الشرقى وتبعه الرجلان الأخران.

They noticed that the chimney was getting narrower and darker.

The rocks proved to him that the Centre of the Earth couldn't be hot as some scientists thought.

They took the right passage first.


9- Why was Axel worried? What did his uncle tell him?
Because they had already used up about half of the water they had brought. They had only enough water for five days. His uncle told him that they would find underground water.

10- Which of the two paths did the men enter?
They entered the eastern path.

11- What did Axel hope to happen?
He hoped that the lava wouldn't pour again through the narrow passage as it had done hundred of years before.
